Clare Morehen

Clare trained at the Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School before being accepted into the Royal Ballet Upper School at just 15 years of age. During her studies, she performed with both The Royal Ballet and Birmingham Royal Ballet. Upon graduating in 2004, she joined Queensland Ballet, rising to Soloist in 2006 and Principal Artist in 2009.

Her performance career saw her collaborate with leading Australian and international choreographers. Her personal highlights include Juliet and Lady Capulet in Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s Romeo and Juliet, Swanhilda in Greg Horsman’s Coppélia, Blanche in François Klaus’ A Streetcar Named Desire, and Catherine in Natalie Weir’s Wuthering Heights.

Following her departure from Queensland Ballet in 2017, Clare worked as a freelance artist, guesting with The Covent Garden Dance Company, M&T in Motion and Melbourne Ballet Company. She has also been in demand as a coach across Queensland’s leading ballet academies and previously served on the teaching faculty of Queensland Ballet Academy.

Clare joined Ballet Theatre Queensland in 2018 as Rehearsal Director and was appointed Artistic Director in March 2019. Under her leadership, BTQ has entered a dynamic new chapter, presenting a growing repertoire of classical and original productions while expanding pathways for young artists.

Alongside restaging celebrated classical works, Clare has choreographed full-length ballets for the company, including Snow White and Alice in Wonderland, reflecting her commitment to accessible storytelling and the development of original Australian ballet.

Driven by a long-term vision for the company’s future, Clare played the central role in securing private investment and philanthropic backing to establish and fit out BTQ HQ, the company’s first permanent home. providing a purpose-built space to support artistic growth, collaboration and community connection.

Clare is deeply committed to nurturing the next generation of dancers and actively seeks opportunities that challenge, inspire and prepare young artists for professional careers. She is passionate about industry collaboration, dancer wellbeing, and opening national and international pathways for emerging Australian dancers.
