1970's guest artist

Garth Welch AM

Born in Brisbane, Garth’s talent was recognised early, and under the guidance of Phyllis Danaher, his gifts were nurtured and encouraged. From these beginnings, he quickly rose through the ranks of The Australian Ballet before embarking on an international career. Despite his global achievements, Garth maintained a deep and enduring connection to BTQ, frequently returning as a guest artist and serving as a valued patron, supporting the company and its dancers throughout his life. Beyond performance, Garth shaped Australian dance as a choreographer, associate artistic director with Ballet Victoria, and later as Artistic Director of West Australian Ballet. He also choreographed extensively for companies across Australia and internationally.

Garth was celebrated not only for his commanding presence as a dancer but also for his influential choreography and leadership. His artistry and vision helped shape the story of ballet in Australia, and his unwavering connection to BTQ remains a cherished part of his legacy.
