General Audition Information
Ballet Theatre Queensland
To audition for Ballet Theatre, you need to be studying Grade 4 RAD (or equivalent syllabus level) or above. For our new Junior Apprentice cohort, you need to be studying Grade 2 to 3 RAD (or equivalent) and be 8 to 10 years old.
Talented students from all dance schools are welcome to audition, with all dancers given an equal opportunity to shine on the day. Auditions include a masterclass viewed by our Artistic Director (and guest adjudicators) in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. This year Junior and Junior Apprentice dancers will also learn a short exercise to showcase their acting abilities. Intermediate and Senior dancers will learn a contemporary phrase as well as a series of pointe work exercises.
Successful dancers are advised by email. Once accepted into the company, dancers rehearse alternate Sundays in term 3 and all Sundays in term 4. The 2024/2025 main company timetable will be available here soon.
Junior Apprentice dancers will begin with the full company Orientation Day on the 2nd of June. The 2024/2025 Junior Apprentice timetable will be available here soon.
Rehearsals are between 9 am and 5 pm at the studios at 57 Hayward Street, Stafford. They begin with company class, taken by The Artistic Director, Rehearsal Director or a professional guest artist, often accompanied by a pianist. The remainder of the day is split up into rehearsals for the upcoming production.
Two weeks of intensive rehearsals are scheduled: the first week of the September school holidays and the week before the performance in January. These rehearsals are compulsory.
Ballet Theatre’s season of five to six performances at Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) utilises all dancers in two casts, giving every dancer the opportunity to perform a variety of roles.

VIDEO AUDITION INFORMATION
In person auditions are preferable, however video auditions are available if you are unable to attend on the day. To be considered, applications, audition fees and videos must be submitted prior to the audition date. The video must include:
– No more than 10 minutes of footage.
– Barre Work: Plies, tendus, adage and grand battement.
– Center work: Adage, center practice including pirouettes or pirouette preparation, warm-up allegro, and grand allegro (Junior level and above)
Intermediate and Senior
-Pointe work: echappes and releves, center practice including a pose arabesque and pose pirouettes en diagonal (if studied prior) OR a classical variation en pointe.
We aim to make this process as simple as possible, so students can be filmed during their regular classes, studio and teachers permitting. The video does not have to be high quality, just clearly showing the movement of the dancer not too far from the camera. No special filming techniques required.
Videos are to be sent as an accessible Youtube or Vimeo link. Straight Mp4 or any other formats will not be accepted. Links are to be included in the application form. Any missing information or unlabeled videos will not be accepted. Please ensure you have submitted your application and state ‘video application’ in the form.
