Leading with Vision: Women in Arts Leadership

On International Women’s Day, Ballet Theatre Queensland celebrates Artistic Director Clare Morehen and the power of female leadership in shaping both the company’s creative vision and the future of its dancers.

On International Women’s Day, we celebrate women whose leadership shapes not only organisations, but futures.

Leadership in the arts is complex. It requires artistic conviction, strategic clarity and the ability to nurture others while holding a long-term vision. In ballet leadership also carries the responsibility of redefining what is possible for the next generation.

Since stepping into the role of Artistic Director in 2019, Clare Morehen has built upon the strong foundations and legacy of those before her, guiding Ballet Theatre Queensland through a period of continued creative growth. Her leadership has been defined not only by maintaining standards of excellence, but by expanding opportunity, creating meaningful professional pathways for young dancers and strengthening the company’s artistic voice.

Central to her tenure has been a commitment to new creation. As Artistic Director, Clare has choreographed two original full-length ballets, Snow White and Alice in Wonderland, contributing original works to the company’s repertoire and investing in the future of Australian storytelling. Commissioning and creating new ballets is an act of courage in itself. It requires trust in collaborators, belief in young artists and a willingness to shape something that has never existed before.

That spirit of creation extends beyond choreography. Under her direction, the company has continued to evolve by deepening partnerships, strengthening training pathways and fostering a culture where discipline and humanity sit side by side.

Female leadership in the arts is not simply about representation; it is about visibility, possibility and example. For many young dancers, their first experience of professional leadership is through a woman who models artistic integrity, resilience and compassion. What they see in that leadership quietly informs what they believe they, too, can become.

Clare’s journey from professional performer to Artistic Director brings lived understanding to the role. Having experienced elite training and a distinguished performing career, she understands both the demands placed on young dancers and the care required to help them flourish.

On this International Women’s Day, we acknowledge the women who lead with clarity and conviction, who balance ambition with mentorship, tradition with innovation, and artistry with stewardship. Through her vision and commitment, Clare Morehen continues to shape not only productions on stage, but the pathways and confidence of the next generation beyond it.
